Dogging in Canberra and the ACT

How the capital’s scene works – its private parties, the hills and lakes, Kambah Pool and the locals’ warnings about walkers and gates.

Canberra has a reputation as a quiet, sensible city of public servants and early nights. Its outdoor scene says otherwise. One regular who has tried both reckons Canberra’s is livelier than Sydney’s – and between a busy private party circuit, a river beach where nudity is legal and a city ringed by hills and reserves, the capital has more going on than most people would guess.

Canberra: small city, surprisingly lively

Canberra’s scene is compact and fairly close-knit. There’s one long-standing car park on the hills at the edge of the city that most people mean when they talk about dogging here, although locals warn it’s mostly men and that couples looking for other couples often have better luck elsewhere.

The real strength is the private party scene. Couples run parties for their friends, meet and vet everyone beforehand – no play at that first meeting – and keep the numbers balanced. They post practical advice for single men too: read the whole post, remember you’re usually talking to the man first, and don’t lead with a photo nobody asked for. They also report that within half a minute of posting that advice, someone ignores it. Canberra being Canberra, the people who follow the rules tend to be the ones who get invited back.

Some locals have tried setting up verified chat groups for exhibitionists, though others say a simple post on the night still works best.

Where people go around Canberra

Canberra is built around bush, hills and water, and its outdoor scene uses all three.

We don’t name exact spots. The local groups share them privately, and given how small Canberra is, a place that gets talked about too much is a place that gets noticed by the wrong people.

Canberrans are everywhere

The biggest local warning isn’t about police – it’s about walkers. Canberrans are keen on the outdoors, and locals say people pop up on trails and in reserves at all hours, in places that feel completely deserted. One regular put it simply: most outdoor spots here are too uncontrolled. The answer is somewhere with long sightlines, where you can see anyone coming well before they see you, or staying in the car.

The other thing to watch is the gates. Many reserves and parks lock up at night, and the times change with the seasons – at Kambah Pool, locals say it’s around 6:30pm in winter and 9pm in summer. Leave the car outside the gate if you’re planning a late one.

Kambah Pool

On the Murrumbidgee River on Canberra’s south-western edge, Kambah Pool is the ACT’s designated nude bathing area, with signs showing exactly where you can strip off. The nude section was extended closer to the car park after naturists lobbied for it, so it’s a shorter walk than it once was.

It’s a genuinely lovely spot, with river beaches, gorge walks and wildlife – regulars point out owls in the trees and even fish nude for yellowbelly. The first beach is the social one, where naturists swim, chat and sunbathe, and the regulars there are keen to keep it that way; the beaches further along are quieter. First-time visitors are sometimes put off by men hanging around, so if you go, behave as you would on any beach. Nudity is allowed inside the marked area – sex isn’t, anywhere.

Queanbeyan and further afield

Canberra’s scene spills over the border into Queanbeyan, and in summer some locals look further afield to the NSW South Coast, a couple of hours’ drive away, where Batemans Bay has its own small online groups. As anywhere with a small population, the people who do best are the ones who arrange things first.

Things to know before you go in the ACT

Staying on the right side of the law in the ACT

The ACT’s Crimes Act makes indecent exposure in, or within view of, a public place an offence, and a local news site once asked its readers whether police should do more after a couple was spotted in a suburban supermarket car park – so complaints do get made.

Pulling into a car park after dark, or chatting with people online, is fine. The trouble starts when someone who didn’t sign up for it can see you. Late nights, out-of-the-way places, staying out of sight and leaving the moment anyone else appears all help. For more, read Is dogging legal? – it’s general information, not legal advice.
