Dogging in Brisbane and Queensland

How the scene works in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and the north – in the state that’s strictest about nudity.

Queensland likes to think of itself as the most buttoned-up state in Australia – it’s the only one on the mainland without a legal nude beach – and yet south-east Queensland has one of the liveliest outdoor scenes in the country. It isn’t new, either. On the old WhosDogging forum in 2006, couples from Logan, Woodridge and the Gold Coast were already asking where to go, and one Brisbane northside regular was proudly reporting that their favourite spot was always left as they found it, with leaf litter the only litter.

Brisbane: busy, social and organised

Brisbane’s scene is bigger and friendlier than its reputation suggests, and much of it is surprisingly well organised.

The city’s online dogging community is busy with first-timers, couples and people from Logan to Redcliffe looking for company on the night. Brisbane also has a large swingers’ community, including a private party house with several hundred members that runs themed nights every week – newbie nights among them – and social groups for people in their thirties and forties who mix play parties with perfectly ordinary get-togethers. Their one shared complaint will sound familiar: too many blunt messages from single men, and not enough people who just know how to be good company.

Where people go around Brisbane

South-east Queensland’s outdoor scene uses the same kinds of places as everywhere else, with a subtropical twist.

We don’t name exact spots. Places stay usable when the people who use them keep quiet about them and keep them clean – which is exactly what that northside regular was getting at twenty years ago.

The Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast

The Gold Coast has its own swingers’ venues and plenty of visitors, so couples on holiday often ask what’s on, and there are waterfront spots near the Broadwater that locals mention. The Sunshine Coast is quieter – and home to the story every Queenslander into this should know.

Alexandria Bay, inside Noosa National Park, has long been an unofficial nude beach. In April 2023, after complaints about lewd behaviour and men approaching women, police ran an operation there, using a drone, and fined a group of people for wilful exposure and charged one man. The state’s naturists were quick to point out that nudism has nothing to do with lewd behaviour, and called for a legal clothing-optional beach. Either way, the lesson is the same: a few people behaving badly can get a place shut down for everyone.

Toowoomba and the regions

Inland, interest runs well ahead of organisation. In Toowoomba, plenty of people ask where to go, and the honest answer from locals is that there’s no settled place – some have tried to get regular meets going and suggested setting up a group chat to make it happen. In a regional town, meeting people online first isn’t just easier, it’s usually the only way anything happens.

Townsville, Cairns and the tropics

North Queensland has active pockets of its own, in Townsville and Cairns especially, with river-mouth car parks, lookouts and parks all getting a mention. Couples there say the same thing couples say in many smaller cities: there are plenty of men keen to watch, and not many other couples. Some of the cruising lounges in the north are men only, too, so couples visiting should check before turning up.

Things to know before you go in Queensland

Staying on the right side of the law in Queensland

Queensland is stricter about nudity than any other mainland state, so discretion matters even more here.

Its Criminal Code covers indecent acts in a public place, and its Summary Offences Act covers wilful exposure. As Alexandria Bay showed, police act when people complain. Being parked somewhere at night, or talking to people you’ve met online, isn’t the problem: being seen by someone who never agreed to it is. Go late, go somewhere quiet, keep it inside the car or well hidden, and pack up the moment anyone else arrives. Our guide Is dogging legal? covers the wider picture (general information, not legal advice).
