Dogging in Edmonton, Calgary and Alberta

How Alberta’s scene works – Edmonton and Calgary, the river valleys, smaller towns, naturism and the park rules that catch people out.

Alberta is the one Canadian province with its own online dogging community – and even there, plenty of people are still working out what the word means. One Edmonton woman discovered that what she’d always called being an exhibitionist had a name, and the replies turned into a lively debate about whether dogging is about being watched or simply about having fun outdoors. In a province of big skies, long drives and short summers, the answer for most people is: a bit of both.

Edmonton: hidden trails and quiet nights

Edmonton regulars talk about one well-known spot with trails tucked away from the road, and they’re refreshingly honest about it. One couple said they’d been many times and seemed to be the only ones in their truck. Another said they’d had fun there about half the times they went and never once had anyone watch. Someone else checked a quiet lot at the end of a road and found a single other person.

That’s the reality of a spread-out city: the places exist, but the people don’t turn up at the same time by chance. When the weather warms up, the online group fills with people hoping to try their luck – and the ones who have the best nights are the ones who arrange to meet.

Calgary: bring your own company

Calgary’s story is similar. One man summed it up: he’d tried a few different spots without much success, unless he was the one bringing a partner. Replies suggested parking lots and parks near the Bow River and a highway rest stop out of town – but nobody promised a crowd. Couples who love being watched post before a night out asking where to go, and Calgary’s swingers’ groups are busy, though couples there grumble that too many people are all talk and no action.

Where people go around Alberta

Alberta’s outdoor scene uses the kinds of places the province has plenty of:

We don’t name exact spots. Be aware that both Edmonton and Calgary close their parks between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., and Calgary doesn’t allow vehicles to be left in parks during those hours – bylaw officers can hand out fines.

A word about the river valleys

Edmonton’s river valley is a huge network of parks and trails right through the city, and it’s used by everyone – cyclists, runners, families and dog walkers. Some corners have been gay cruising spots for decades. A newcomer who wandered onto one set of trails with his dog was far from pleased by what he found, and locals replied that every city has a spot like it. Know where you are, go late, and remember who else uses these places.

Red Deer, Grande Prairie and the rest of Alberta

Beyond the two big cities, Alberta’s towns are a long way apart and the scene is small. A married couple in Grande Prairie, new to all of it and experimenting with posting online, said what they really wanted was to meet local people to hang out with – board games, a drink or a coffee, no expectations – and see where things went. Other couples from the same town replied. In a smaller place, that kind of slow start is usually how it happens.

Naturism in Alberta

Alberta has no official nude beach. In Calgary, naturists use unofficial clothing-optional areas at Weaselhead Flats and at Hidden Beach in Fish Creek Provincial Park, and near Devon there’s a private day-use area promoted for clothing-free visits. Near Tofield, the Helios Nudist Association – founded in 1964, with its own land since 1978 – describes itself as North America’s northernmost nudist camp. All of these are for relaxed, non-sexual nudity; treat them that way.

Things to know before you go in Alberta

Staying on the right side of the law in Alberta

Alberta follows the same federal Criminal Code as the rest of the country, so sexual activity where other people can see it is an offence, and police in Alberta respond to complaints – including in Okotoks in 2026, over an incident involving a vehicle. On top of that, the city park bylaws mean you can be fined just for being in a park after hours.

Talking to people online or parking somewhere quiet isn’t the problem. Being seen by someone who never agreed to watch is. Keep it late, keep it out of the way, keep it out of sight, and leave if anyone else shows up. Our guide Is dogging legal? explains more – general information, not legal advice.
