Dogging in Montreal and Quebec
How Quebec’s scene works – Montreal’s clubs, the French words locals use, how couples get started, Oka and the law.
Quebec has a special place in the story of adult fun in Canada. It was a Montreal club, raided by police in 1998, that took its case all the way to the Supreme Court – and won. Today Montreal has the liveliest club scene in the country, Quebec couples have their own words for what they enjoy, and the province’s best-loved naturist beaches survive on nothing more official than tradition and tolerance.
Libertins, échangistes and côte-à-côte
In Quebec the scene speaks French. Swingers are libertins, the lifestyle is le milieu libertin, and swapping is l’échangisme. Couples who want to play in the same room as others without touching call it côte-à-côtisme – side by side – or simply parallel play. Plenty of Quebecers use the English word too: one Gatineau couple in their forties asked outright where they could go dogging around town.
If you’re searching for people in Quebec, those are the words that find them – and many posts are written in both languages.
Montreal: Canada’s club capital
Montreal’s lifestyle clubs are the biggest in Canada, and for many couples they’re where it all starts. One pair of high-school sweethearts, together more than twenty years, went to a masquerade night intending only to watch. A couple across the bar kept catching their eye; they never spoke, and for a first night, that felt just right. Experienced regulars told another newcomer couple they’d picked well for respect and consent – the thing first-timers worry about most.
Montreal also has a long-running adult cinema with a reputation of its own. Regulars explain that single men end up in the general section, which is mostly men, while couples have their own area – and some couples go to put on a show without sharing. The advice for men is simple: bring a partner.
How Quebec couples get started
The stories sound familiar. A husband from the South Shore explained that after twenty years together, his wife had discovered an exhibitionist streak – always ending up by the hotel patio door, opening the blinds after dark. He wanted to suggest playing in the same room as another couple, no contact, just sharing the space. The replies pointed him to the clubs as the easiest first step.
Further out, a couple from Trois-Rivières – parents with busy jobs and new to the scene – posted that they wanted to take it slowly and build a connection first, and that self-described “alphas” needn’t apply. Several other local parent couples replied, and someone mentioned a social get-together in town that weekend. Outside Montreal, that’s how it works: meet people, talk, and let things develop.

Where people go around Quebec
Outdoors, Quebecers head for much the same kinds of places as other Canadians:
- Forest trails and back roads outside the cities – a Gatineau couple was pointed towards the woods north of town.
- Quiet parking lots on the edges of town, late at night.
- Parks and riverside spots along the St. Lawrence.
- Naturist beaches in summer – for sunbathing, not sex.
We don’t name exact spots. People who use them share details privately.
Oka, Cap-aux-Oies and Quebec’s naturist beaches
Quebec has no official nude beach. Instead, the province’s naturists use a handful of traditional spots that are tolerated rather than approved. The best known is the far eastern end of the beach in Oka National Park, nicknamed Okapulco. The park has posted Criminal Code warnings since 1990, but the naturist area carries on, and some signs now mark where it starts.
Regulars’ tips: buy your park access online, arrive early on a sunny weekend because the queue to get in can be long, park as far left as you can and walk until you reach the sign, and bring a parasol – there’s no shade. The lake bottom drops off suddenly, so take care swimming. Near Quebec City, the closest naturist beach is Cap-aux-Oies in Charlevoix, where people turn up even on weekdays. Like any naturist beach, these spots depend on good behaviour – some regulars worry about men filming, and that kind of thing is what gets beaches closed.
Things to know before you go in Quebec
- Summer is short. June to early September is the outdoor season; winter moves everything indoors.
- Bilingual helps. A few words of French go a long way, especially outside Montreal.
- Bring repellent. Black flies and mosquitoes are part of the deal in the woods.
- Trust your instincts. If somewhere feels wrong, leave.
Staying on the right side of the law in Quebec
The Criminal Code is the same in Quebec as everywhere else in Canada. An indecent act in a public place, in front of others, is an offence, and Quebec police do make arrests – including, in 2026, over alleged indecent acts in a shopping-centre parking lot in Quebec City. The Supreme Court’s 2005 ruling protects what happens inside private clubs; it doesn’t cover a parking lot.
Being parked somewhere quiet, or chatting with people online, isn’t what causes trouble – an unwilling audience is. Wait until it’s late, keep well away from homes and paths, stay hidden, and pack up the moment someone else arrives. See Is dogging legal? for more – general information, not legal advice.

Quick answers
Is there dogging in Montreal?
Yes, though most Montrealers start in the clubs. In Quebec you’ll often see it described as libertin or exhibitionist fun.
What does côte-à-côtisme mean?
Playing in the same room as another couple, side by side, without swapping or touching.
Does Quebec have a nude beach?
Not an official one. Naturists use traditional, tolerated spots such as Oka (Okapulco) and Cap-aux-Oies.
Are swingers’ clubs legal in Quebec?
Yes. The Supreme Court ruled in 2005, in a case about a Montreal club, that consensual group sex in private clubs isn’t indecent.
Is dogging legal in Quebec?
No more than elsewhere in Canada: indecent acts in public in front of others are a Criminal Code offence. More on the law.
