Dogging in Vancouver and British Columbia

How BC’s scene works – Vancouver’s step-by-step lifestyle, Wreck Beach, the Okanagan and the Island, and how to stay on the right side of the law.

British Columbia is the most relaxed province in Canada about bare skin. It has one of the country’s two official clothing-optional beaches, a lake beach in the Okanagan that has been nude for generations, and a lifestyle scene in Vancouver that welcomes nervous beginners. What it doesn’t have is much talk of dogging by that name – people on the West Coast talk about car fun, public play and being an exhibitionist couple, and they tend to ease into it rather than dive in.

Vancouver: a step-by-step scene

One Vancouver regular wrote a guide for couples that sums up how the city works. Step one: get comfortable with less clothing – at dance parties where people wear very little, or with a trip to Wreck Beach. Only then move on to the clubs, one step at a time. He added a warning worth repeating: plenty of couples try the lifestyle to fix a relationship that’s already struggling, and it can push them past the point of no return.

Newer couples in Vancouver and Victoria often post that they’d like to start by watching another couple, or by playing in the same room without swapping – an exhibitionist streak first, everything else later, if at all.

Where people go around British Columbia

British Columbians who play outdoors look for the obvious kinds of places:

We don’t name exact spots. In Vancouver, city parks are generally open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and being in them outside the posted hours isn’t allowed.

Wreck Beach

Below the University of British Columbia, Wreck Beach was officially designated clothing-optional in 1991 and is one of Vancouver’s best-loved places. Getting there means roughly 400 steps down – and, as regulars like to point out, 400 back up, so go easy on the drinks and bring water. One couple skipped the stairs altogether by renting kayaks and paddling round, with the storage hatches full of ice and snacks. You’ll find every kind of person, clothed or not; the regulars gather further along in either direction. One man said a visit with his wife taught him more about body confidence than anything else, and a woman who has gone every year since her twenties said she has never once felt uncomfortable there.

It isn’t perfect. A long-time regular described a day when groups of young men wandered about with phones in hand and cameras peeking out of pockets, and a family was filmed by a clothed man who then followed them up the stairs. The beach’s answer is its regulars, who are known for standing up to creeps, and a long-running preservation society that campaigns to keep it clothing-optional – and police sometimes patrol on busy weekends. The beach closes at sunset, and in summer rangers and police clear the main trail. It’s a place for sun and swimming; students who came across a couple filming sex there in 2026 were not impressed.

The Okanagan, the Interior and the Island

In the Okanagan, Three Mile Beach near Penticton has been a clothing-optional spot for years without any formal designation – the police handle it as they see fit. Couples from Kelowna, Kamloops and the Cariboo post looking for others nearby or for travellers passing through, and one Vancouver regular’s advice to people in the Interior was to look for local events or start with the nude beach near Kelowna.

Vancouver Island has no legal nude beach, though naturists have used a few lakes and lagoons near Victoria for decades – at their own risk. In the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford couples post about exploring local nude spots, and naturists have even run a clothing-optional harbour cruise in Vancouver for people trying it for the first time.

Things to know before you go in BC

Staying on the right side of the law in BC

BC follows the federal Criminal Code: an indecent act in public, in front of other people, is an offence, and police do follow up – in 2025 Chilliwack police asked the public to help identify a man over an incident in a parking lot, and there have been cases in Abbotsford and Langley too. Simple nudity is treated more lightly, which is why naturist beaches carry on.

A quiet parking spot or a chat online isn’t what gets people into trouble – an audience that never agreed to it is. Leave it until late, keep away from homes and trails, stay out of view, and call it a night if anyone else turns up. Is dogging legal? has the wider picture – general information, not legal advice.
